How long should you let corn soak in water before grilling?

By Tom | April 11, 2008

§V H§ asked:

What is the ideal time, and how long would be too long to soak it for? If you soak the corn too long, will it get tough after grilling or what? Thanks a lot :)

ya know.. i have always just wrapped my corn, husk and all, in foil and grilled them for a while on the grill and then removed the foil after about 15 minutes and left them on the grill for another about 10 minutes without the foil but in the husks… thats how i have always done it. then i was at my boyfriends house of the weekend and his mom soaked theirs in water first.. i had never known to do this but they turned out the same.. i didnt even realize there was a difference mine were not soaked and they were just as moist and delicious. she soaked hers for about 45 – 1 hour though. i dont soak mine though, and they are great.

I don’t soak corn. Here is what I do.

    GRILLED CORN ON THE COB

Corn on cob with husks on
    Butter (stick works best)
    Aluminum foil

Pull back small amount of husk. Put small amount of butter on corn. Put husks back over again. Wrap in foil. Put on hot grill turning once in a while. Leave on grill 15-30 minutes. Corn won’t burn too fast. Be careful very hot when husking corn.

0 minutes. unless you have some type of corn issue that i’ve never heard of…you should never soak corn before cooking. peel of the husk and the stringy silk, wash it and dry well. i have a link below for methods and recipes. i like to season mine with salt and pepper and a little butter, wrap in foil and grill about 30 minutes or until tender.

the only way it will be tough is if you take the husk off the corn. The only reason you soak it is to keep the husks from burning but it isn’t necessary if you turn it often enough.

I do it this way but keep a sprayed bottle full of water near me and spray it now and then so the husks don’t burn. It also gives it a little moisture but mostly so it doesn’t burn.

    Grilled Corn-on-the-Cob Recipe

    Ingredients

4 ears fresh corn, in their husks
Butter (or an herb butter) for serving
    Method

1 Prepare your grill, gas or charcoal, with direct, high heat, about 550°F.

2 Remove just the visible silks from the tips of the corn. Place the corn in their husks on the hot grill. Cover. Turn the corn occasionally, until the husks are charred on all sides, about 15 to 20 minutes.

3 Remove corn from grill. Let sit for 5 minutes. Use a hand towel to protect your hands while removing the silks and charred husks from the corn.

    Serve hot, with butter.

I wasn’t aware that anybody did.

I would agree with the wrap-it-up-and-grill answers.

Corn loses its sweetness the longer it’s held (the sugar turns to starch), so the less time it takes from stalk to mouth, the better. I wouldn’t soak it at all.
